The Melnick State of the Israeli Economy Index rose by 0.3 percent in May 2022. The expansion of the business sector continues, although there are preliminary signs that most components of the index have stabilized in recent months, which could signal a moderation in the growth rate. Revenue in commerce and services, which reflects the development of domestic demand, and especially the development of private consumption, maintain a stable high level. The decline in the industrial production index, which reflects the supply side of the business sector, continues, and the level of industrial production in April is not different from that of the beginning of the year. The level of the import index, which consists mainly of inputs to domestic production, is also not different from that of the beginning of the year. The number of employee posts in the business sector continues to rise, evidence of labor market strength.
The components of the May index include: a decrease of 0.4% in the industrial production index in April, after a decrease of 2.9% in March; a 0.6% increase in revenue from commerce and services in April after a 0.5% decrease in March; a 1.0% decline in the import index in May, after a 3.1% rise in April and a 0.2% rise in the number of employee posts in the business sector in March, after a 0.3% rise in February.
